While our nation appears to be hopelessly divided, it should be noted most Americans actually still agree on the two most basic principles of modern democracy: that everyone has the right to say and do and believe what they want if it doesn’t infringe on the rights of others, and that every person should have a legitimate chance for success and happiness.
These principles give us a common purpose regardless of race, religion, or political affiliation, and they can guide us through all political debate and policymaking – with our differences serving as a sign of our liberty and the source of our greatness.
So let’s reject those who want to divide and weaken us for their own benefit, and let’s stay united and strong through a commitment to the basic principles we hold in common.
